The Most Powerful Tidal Turbine in the World Has Started Generating Power Off Scotland Coast
Good news! The world’s most powerful tidal turbine has now started feeding energy to the power grid at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney – an archipelago off the coast of Scotland. The turbine, weighing 680 metric tons and 74 meters long, was anchored in the “Fall of Warness” which is a body of water with high tidal activity. The 2 megawatt generator was then connected to a sub-sea cable that then connected it to the local electric grid on land. The expectation is for the turbine to remain in operation for the next 15 years.
The turbine is expected to provide enough electricity to meet the annual need of 2000 UK homes. This is one of several such projects seeking to provide cleaner energy to the UK grid and it is expected that several more tidal projects will come online over the next few years. Tidal and wave energy remains a surprisingly small sector of the green energy push in Europe with only 260 kilowatts added in Europe in 2020. Wind, for example, makes up approximately 14.7 gigawatts in additions last year.
