Researchers Discover Breakthrough That Can Prevent and Reverse Alzheimer’s

Good news! A research team led by Dr. S.R. Wayne Chen has discovered a potential breakthrough in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. The discovery is centered around the ryanodine receptor, which acts like a gateway to the cells in the heart and brain, and forces a limit on the amount of time that gateway is open. The team also identified a drug that can limit the disease’s progression in animal models.

Dr. Chen’s team used a portion of an existing heart drug, called carvedilol, to treat Alzheimer’s affected mice. The results were very promising and showed a clear distinction between the treated mice and the control mice. Further testing is needed before the method can be tested in humans, but the early results are exciting. Especially since the drug being used has already been tested before.

More than 5 million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s disease and it is the 6th leading cause of death in the US.
