Polio Officially Eradicated in Africa
Good news! The African Regional Certification Commission has declared the continent free from wild polio for the first time. A decade ago, Nigeria alone accounted for over half of the global cases of Polio. The accomplishment is owed to a massive immunization campaign launched by Nelson Mandela in 1996, and resulting in billions of oral polio vaccines being administered to African children. The Polio vaccine was originally developed by Dr. Jonas Salk in 1952, and distributed widely in more developed countries.
The only countries now faced with wild Polio are Afghanistan and Pakistan.
