NJ Approved Largest Offshore Wind Farm in US
Good news! New Jersey just approved two massive wind farms off the Atlantic coast that they say will eventually power over 1 million homes. The largest ever wind-power award is a combined 2.7 gigawatts of capacity that will be split between two projects – Orsted’s Ocean Wind II and Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind. The projects were awarded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities on June 30th. The expectation is for the farms to consist of 193 turbines situated 10 miles off of Atlantic City. Although there will likely be challenges to the contracts – critics claim it will have a negative impact on tourism, bird migration, and fishing – construction on the Atlantic Shores project is expected to begin in 2024 and Orsted’s in 2026.
Current NJ Governor, Phil Murphy has set a goal for 7.5 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035, while current US President Joe Biden has called for 30 gigawatts nationwide by 2030.
