Good news! A clinical trial has found that a new “all-in-one” artificial pancreas is effective in controlling type 1 diabetes in children aged 6 and up. The study consisted of 101 children aged 6 to 13 and separated them into two groups – one with the new system and one with the old. The new system showed an improvement of 7% in managing blood glucose during the day and 26% during the night.
The nighttime control is of particular importance, as that is when it is most difficult to check and control glucose levels which can lead to hypoglycemia. The study was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
