Good news! Environmental activist and part-time actor Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged $43 million of support to conserve and restore the Galapagos Islands. Leo has partnered with re:wild – a conservation group that he helped co-found earlier this year – to help restore the islands biodiversity and reinstate various local species to their original habitat.

One of the projects seek to reintroduce 13 locally extinct species to Floreana Island including the first mockingbird described by Charles Darwin – the Floreana mockingbird. In addition to the reintroduction of species, the projects will also aim to preserve endangered species across the archipelago. On Floreana alone there remains 54 threatened species. One such program will pay for a captive breeding program intended to save the pink iguana from extinction.
