Fusion Energy Could Soon Be a Reality
Good news! Researchers at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center have validated the physics necessary to create a new fusion experiment capable of producing more energy than it consumes. Fusion energy has long been a running joke in physics communities – always being “just 30 years away”. Launched in 2018, a new experiment called SPARC is expected to be the first device to achieve a “burning plasma”, a self sustaining fusion reaction capable of producing output without any additional input.
The researchers are eager to put their math to the test, as they expect to have a functioning device for experimentation as early as June 2021. This will be the first step before a prototype reactor can be built, and not everyone is convinced this is the energy of the future that we have been promised for so long.
