Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Have Returned to UK Waters

April 22, 2021 by No Comments

Good news! Atlantic bluefin tuna are confirmed to have returned to the waters off the UK coasts. A new study has shown 989 unique sightings of the fish since 2014, bringing a welcome return to the area since their disappearance in the 1960s. The tuna now arrive in May and stay in the area as late as January.

The long absence has been attributed to population decline in the species and overfishing. Since 2009 catch quotas for the tuna have been implemented and more severely enforced. This is largely attributed to the increase in sightings and and local populations since 2014, although environment and prey dynamics have also been credited.
