Good news! A 12 year old boy from Indianapolis, Elliot Preddie, has been cured of sickle cell after receiving a stem cell transplant from a matching donor. One year later, Elliot is still free from the affliction. Prior to finding a donoe, Elliot was receiving chronic blood transfusions monthly to help stem the disease.

What is sickle cell?

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders that affects the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin found in red blood cells. The cells die early, leaving fewer healthy red cells. The condition can also lead to painful blocking of blood flow in the body.
